Winter Project on the Homestead

Fall is here.  Now that the garden is pulled, our homegrown food is waiting for us in the root cellar, and the days are getting shorter, it’s time to think about a winter project on the homestead.

I don’t do well without something productive to do, and making the house and the homestead more productive, efficient, and feeling more like home is exactly where I want to be spending my time.

The yard is mostly put away for the winter.

Now that the chickens are gone, there’s less to do on a daily basis and more general upkeep to think about.  My mindset for the yard has shifted indoors: buying seeds, planning the garden for next year, and turning our sunroom into a makeshift greenhouse. But those projects can wait.  It’s a bit too early in the season to be thinking about seeds.

I have lots of ideas for this 125+-year-old farmhouse.

The house doesn’t exactly need updating – everything works – but it needs our touch.  It needs to feel like it’s ours and not the people’s who lived here before us.  But mostly, it needs to be functional.  There is very little storage in the house outside of the bedroom closets, so creating space in the farmhouse is the perfect winter project on the homestead.

Here’s what I want to do:

  1. Create a pegboard wall in the kitchen
  2. Build a mantle wall around the tv

Making renovations at the farmhouse very much involves Andrew.  I’ll need his tools, math skills, expertise, strength, and motivation to make these two projects happen.

Creativity is the best winter project on the homestead

I like projects that (1) use my hands and (2) have a tangible outcome.  I like to see and hold the work that I did.

In my efforts to become more self-sustaining and create a business from the homestead, I plan on creating products that I can market and sell any time of year.

These are the winter projects I want to make:

  1. Making candles
  2. Making soap

Finding a winter project on the homestead is going to be essential to get me through the dark months and more COVID restrictions. Plus, because I have so many skills to learn, I think it’s best to jump in with both feet.  My productivity will soar, and I’ll feel more in control of my life.

Are you working on winter projects?  What do you want to accomplish?

Soaps and candles….. You never cease to amaze me!

So far my focus has been indoors. Feeding my festive creative side with Christmas Tree Lot inspired Christmas decor, embracing Christmas Gnomes and trying to organize the last few areas of the new home.

Our winter projects are focused on the man cave for the mister! In order of priority, finishing the basement bathroom, building a bar, and painting the walls. Unfortunately the mister and I are not “handy” so we are relying heavily on friends and family to assist with the bathroom and building of the bar!

Happy Holidays to the Dirty Skirt Farm!
